healthy looking lawn in Teign Valley

Maintaining a large garden with sweeping views of the Teign Valley

This property consists of a mature landscaped garden built in the 1970s with beautiful views over the Teign valley that had become overgrown. The garden has many sections, including wide, winding grassed pathways, a raised orchard, a flat lawn, several shrub and flower beds, allotment areas for fruit and vegetable growing, and greenhouses.

The Garden Boot Company worked with the client to rejuvenate the garden and return it to its former glory.

On a weekly basis, a team of two gardeners tidied the shrub and flower beds removing bramble, ivy and weeds and pruned the shrubs. The trees in the orchard needed a lot of care which we gave them by removing ivy, limbing up branches taking away dead/overgrown trees, and opening up the vista.

We improved the grass, scarified the lawns, seeded grass paths and straightened up path edges, making the grass look lush and cared for. We redesigned raised flower beds and boundaries that had aged and weathered across the garden.

Location: Layered gardens at Lustleigh in Dartmoor

Creating an English garden with elements of a Mediterranean planting  in the heart of Dartmoor

Dartmoor has its own microclimate, which means a solid understanding of the local conditions is crucial to making the garden successful. Part of this knowledge is knowing where trees, shrubs, and plants are placed. This is the knowledge we have in abundance at the Garden Boot Company. When asked to design and build a garden I get excited; the process allows me to submerge my knowledge of ecology and understanding of the seasons and local environment.

Here on the edge of Dartmoor, this large, varied garden requires our three-man team to work together for four hours once a week to maintain and create a beautiful garden. We’re particularly proud of our woodland tree planting and winding woodland paths.

Tree planting

In the picturesque settings of Lustleigh, South Devon, garden tree planting requires a thoughtful approach. Our expert guidance has given a real sense of balance to the trees of this garden.

We specialise in selecting tree varieties that maintain their charm without overwhelming the space and offer insight tailored to enhance year-round visual appeal. Whether you choose species that retain their foliage in winter or deciduous, each choice considers the individual aspect of your garden. Here, the backdrop was a beautiful Dartmoor valley, and some trees were chosen for their ability to withstand heavy pruning and to keep the stunning views.

This careful planning ensures that each tree not only fits your garden’s aesthetic and spatial requirements but also contributes to the enduring beauty and balance of your sanctuary through the seasons.

If you have a garden project that you are planning to plant trees in contact us using our online form or call today to speak to Dan.

Turfing

Laying garden turf achieves optimal results in mid-autumn, although installation can effectively occur anytime from mid-autumn to early spring, provided the soil conditions are right. In this garden’s microclimate, the south-facing slope quickly dries out, so timing is imperative.

We at the Garden Boot Company use our understanding of seasons and ecology to maximise the returns in your garden. Before undertaking any job, we give you our knowledge of expert timing, matching the requirements of your location and providing stunning results.

Please reach out to Daniel via our contact page to discuss your needs.

Services in focus: Wall building, Grass care, Pruning, Pond maintenance, Compost bins building

A well-proportioned, hand-built garden that needed a (few) helping hands!

My client’s garden in Bovey Tracey was lovingly hand-built and designed by the owners, as was the house; the garden just needs a little maintenance to keep it looking its best.

That’s where the Garden Boot Company came into play! Our tasks include grass care, border maintenance, border wall builds, pruning, tree care, and further specialised tasks such as soil improvement using tools like a hollow tiner, which reduces soil compaction and gets seed, drainage, and nutrients into the soil.

We also built a custom three-tier compost bin that readies the compost from food waste and garden waste, allowing for its eventual use on flower beds. This all adds to the sustainable life cycle of a garden, allowing the owners to focus on the more important things in life, like enjoying their garden through the seasons.

Here is a tiny selection of gardening services we get on with weekly to keep it looking it’s best.

Our Services undertaken in Bovey Tracey

Garden wall builds

A seasoned hand at dry stone walling, I take pride in natural wall building methods that use stones from the land to keep a very natural look in your garden. This helps gardens blend effortlessly into the setting and adds solid structure to the garden..

Here, we used stones gathered from the garden and matched the main feature wall made from iron stone, a frequently found tough slate of South Devon.

If you have any garden wall requirements feel free to get in touch, and we can discuss further.

Soil Spreading to promote even grass texture

Many people don’t realise that healthy soil is fundamental to healthy grass, at the Bovey Tracey property shown here, we use a machine called a hollow tiner, which, as mentioned earlier, which reduces the compaction of the soil by taking small plugs of soil and grass out to provide aeration.

We then add a layer of material on top of the grass. This is done via a ‘landzee’ soil spreader. The material can be mixed like seed and compost or sand and topsoil. It’s evenly and quickly applied and allows for great results.

If you feel your grass requires a little tender loving care, reach out to the Garden Boot Company to go through how we can help.

Compost bins and sustainable structures

We always look to composting in the gardens we care for, as it is so good for soil composition, we believe that removing green waste can have a negative impact on gardens, though some weeds are best disposed of!

In this image we show a compost bin setup features a traffic light system for our users and dpc plastic lining to restrict the ingress of ivy & bind weed.

Ok that's it for now but if you've seen anything that you think we can do for you...
