Giving a Bovey Tracey garden room to breathe, and something to give back

This project in Bovey Tracey was all about taking stock and putting the garden first. Ahead of the summer months, our client wanted to do things properly: build the soil, encourage wildlife, and make use of everything the garden had already produced rather than simply carting it away.

We built new compost heaps, chipped the hedge material to use as mulch across the beds, put in wildlife-friendly planting, and created a dedicated bee and insect habitat tucked into a quiet corner of the garden. Sometimes the most rewarding work is the kind that gives back.

Wildlife-friendly planting that works with the garden, not against it

Choosing the right plants for wildlife is about more than just scattering a few wildflowers. We selected planting that would attract pollinators through the summer months, provide cover and food for beneficial insects, and sit naturally within the character of the existing garden. It is a low-maintenance approach that rewards the garden and the people who use it in equal measure.

Composting and mulching: nothing wasted

The hedge material that came down during tidying was chipped on site and used straight away as mulch across the beds. This keeps moisture in the soil, suppresses weeds, and slowly feeds the ground as it breaks down over the coming months. Alongside that, we built new compost heaps to handle ongoing garden and organic waste, keeping everything in a healthy cycle rather than it going off site.

A quiet corner for bees and insects

We created a dedicated habitat area in a sheltered corner of the garden. Away from the main activity of the space, it gives solitary bees, beetles and other beneficial insects somewhere undisturbed to nest and thrive. It requires very little ongoing attention and makes a genuine difference to the health of the wider garden.
